What is Gel Candle Wax?
Regular wax candles are made from various kinds of wax which are essentially derived from plant, animal or petroleum oil. Gel candles are also made from oil but it is 95% mineral oil and 5% polymer resin. The resin is a powder and when mixed with the mineral oil, transforms the union into a solid state of a particular density. Gel wax comes in high, medium and low density states.

The steps to making gel wax candles are basically the same as regular wax candles: melt the wax, pour into the mold, allow to cool, remove from mold. However, the equipment and techniques are different.
First, gel wax will not melt in a double boiler as used in most candle making. It requires greater heat. Many gel candle makers use multi-cookers, which are basically a type of metal deep fryer with a non-stick coating.
A word of warning though, gel wax can catch fire so be sure to have a chemical fire extinguisher handy, and although multi-cookers have a temperature dial, also use a thermometer so you can closely monitor the temperature.
Use a metal or hard plastic stirrer. Avoid using wooden spoons as wood can sometimes add bubbles in the gel. Of course this may be a desired effect in which case you may want to experiment with using a wooden utensil.
Gel Candle Coloring
Adding color to your gel wax candles is quite simple. Use a liquid candle dye. Do not use clothing dye, soap dye, food coloring or crayons as they are not designed for candles and will affect the way your candle burns.
Be sure to use only a drop, it takes only a tiny amount to get the desired effect. Remember you want to maintain the translucent effect which is one of the great appealing attributes of making gel candles.
