One of the easiest ways to start candle making is with a candle making kit. These kits are set up in a variety of ways, from totally complete kits to ones that just contain wax, scents, coloring agents and instructions. They vary in cost from around $25 to over $200, depending on what materials and equipment they contain.

If you are just beginning candle making, it may be best to start with a kit that contains the essential equipment, such as a good thermometer and a melting pot as well as the necessary wax and wicks. Most kits are designed to include everything required to make a certain type of candle, so will also supply a choice of fragrance oils and dye chips, and candle molds for that type of candle.

For example, if you want to make soy container candles, then you can easily find a selection of soy candle making kits. The kit may contain the soy wax, a pouring pitcher, thermometer, containers for the candles, tabbed wicks, a selection of fragrance oils and liquid dyes, along with complete instructions. You will just need to supply a melting pot or double boiler for melting the wax, and a stir stick. No need for you to research wick types, or locate sources for the materials on your own. What an easy way to have instant results!

Perhaps you want to make tealights, votive candles or pillar candles. Candle making kits can easily be found for each of these candle types. These kits will include the correct molds, the correct types of wicks, and of course, the wax, scent and dye materials. Each one will give you step-by-step instructions for making that particular type of candle. Once you have purchased a kit, and now have the essential equipment, you will just need to buy more of the expendable supplies such as waxes, dyes, essential fragrance oils and wicks.

You may wonder whether candle making kits are cost-effective, compared to buying your supplies separately. Having done a cost comparison, I can tell you that buying a candle making kit will not only save you hours of research, it will probably not cost you more than buying the individual items you require to make a particular type of candle. You will need to know just what each kit contains, and what else you may need in the way of equipment to be able to use it. Remember that any equipment the kit contains, such as pouring or melting containers and thermometer are reusable supplies.

Candle making supplies are becoming more popular and are easy to find these days. Many sources can be found on the internet, or you can visit any large craft store to find what you need. Many people want eco-friendly candles, so waxes derived from plant materials such as soy, and essential oil fragrances are becoming very easy to find. There is an expanding market for these supplies as well as unique candles.

Candle making can become a wonderful do-it-yourself hobby, or even a creative and profitable new business venture for you.

Candle making molds come in many shapes and imagines. There are the standard molds, which will create various sizes of circular or square candles, or small trays that make a set of small tea light candles or votives. There are many specialty molds that can be ordered online or found in craft stores in holiday shapes, birthday shapes, and shapes of animals, nature, and foods, among many others. Candle molds are use to give candles the shape. There are many different ways to use candle molds, from rigid glass, plastics ones to metal and latex molds.

Standard Types of Candle molds

Glass molds cool down quickly and offer a smooth finish and rarely stick, but are delicate and prone to scratching and cracking, which will lead to breakage.

Metal molds are known for their longevity. Because metal molds do tend to stick, however, it is recommended you lightly spray metal candle molds with a store-bought silicone mold release spray, designed for just this purpose. To prevent the metal molds from rusting and eventually leaking or cracking, spray a light coating of the same silicone on the inside and outside of the mold before storing.

Aluminum molds are extremely durable and come in a variety of shapes and sizes. What most candle maker’s love about aluminum candle molds is that they do not have seams like some other molds have, so you don’t have to worry about trimming your candles once they are cooled.

Rubber candle molds are more flexible and offer you the added benefit of more intricate designs. As the candle cools it is advisable to keep a close eye on these types of molds. During this timeframe, candles may distort due to the flexibility of the mold. While rubber molds begin to break down over time, they create a nice matte finish on the candle and are sought after for both the different designs they offer and the ease in which the candle comes out of the mold.

Plastic mold is rigid, will not bend and is the least expensive of the candle molds available today. Intricate designs will not work well with this type of mold. However, since plastic molds can be reused many times without worry of damage or cracks, they are also the perfect mold for the beginning candle maker to use. Plastic molds offer a unique chance for the crafter to perfect his or her craft before moving on to the next type of mold or to a large candle.

Rigid molds can be made from glass, metal or plastic. Rigid molds are used to make unusual shapes such as bold geometrical shapes. Plastic molds are often used as they are the cheapest. However you cannot use rigid plastic molds with candle scents or fill them with wax heated to over 80 degrees Celsius (175 deg Fahrenheit) as this can cause damage to the mould.

Latex molds are very popular as they are easy to use and relatively inexpensive. They come in a variety of shapes and sizes and are quite versatile. Latex is very stretchable and is often used to create more complex shapes such as animals, fruits and flowers.

If you decide to create your own candle molds, here are 13 items you probably already have at home that can be used as molds:

Yogurt pots

Milk cartons

Drinking glasses

Cake tins

Bowls

Strong cardboard are fantastic as candle molds.

Plastic cup

Pringles can

Chinese take-out containers

Frozen juice cans

Oatmeal boxes

Egg containers not the Styrofoam type

Larger tomato cans

Regardless of what type of candle making molds you use just have fun making your candles.

By adding scented candles to any room you can set the mood for people in the room. Scented candles can stimulate, relax, and help to bring back memories of good times. A very subtle scented candle is more attractive to many people. They can bring about a change in mood without bringing awareness to the reason for the change.

Using Scents in Your Homemade Candles

It is important that when adding scents to your candles that you add those scents specifically made for candles or pure essential oils. Other types of scents have additives that can affect how your candle burns or how the scent smells once heated with paraffin.

It is recommended that when you first start making scented candles that you use only one scent. By doing so you are able to experiment with the amount of oil that you will need to use to obtain the scent that you desire.

The usual ratio of wax to scent is one pound of wax to ½ -1 oz. of essential oil or candle scent. If you want a stronger scented candle you will need to find a special wax that doesn’t sweat the oil.

Scents are added after the wax has been melted but before pouring the wax into your mold, container, or free form candle. This allows the scent to mix evenly throughout your candle. Remember to have a small amount of the scented wax to use for topping off your candle. Paraffin candles do tend to shrink some in the middle after hardening.

Experimenting to Find Your own Personal Scent

Don’t be afraid to experiment with creating scents. When creating your own scents you will need a medicine dropper, small glass dish, toothpicks, cotton swabs, small brown bottle or bottles, different essential oils and some ground coffee.

Remember these are for candles so you don’t want to mix these oils with bases. Note that good essential oils can be a little expensive but they go a long way. There are many places to buy essential oils such as your local craft store.

Once you have everything assembled, place paper under your working area; old newspapers work well for these projects. In the small glass dish place two drops of the main essential oil that you want to use. Put a small drop of another essential oil that you have chosen to blend with the first oil into the glass dish. Mix both oils in the dish with a toothpick. Walk away from the oils and smell the coffee to clear the mingling fragrances from nose. Once you return to the dish, smell the oils from a distance, rather than placing your nose too close, to get a better idea of how the fragrance you have created smells. You can mix any combination of oils using this technique to determine your likes and dislikes.

Once you have achieved the fragrance you love, mix the oils in the same manner or ratio that you used when creating it. For example if you used 2 drops of bergamot and 1 drop of rose, you may mix 2 oz of bergamot with 1 oz of rose to create enough scent for your candle.

Remember that you only use ½ – 1 oz of oil to a pound of wax. Use caution and never use more than this amount unless you are using a special wax that allows more oil to be added. This is because essential oils are flammable.

Once you have created your fragrance, store the oil in a small glass brown bottle in a cool area to protect the oils from the light and extreme temperatures. Let the oil infuse for approximately three days prior to use. Test the oil on a cotton swab to see how much, if any, the fragrance has changed since storing it. Some change usually occurs.

Well you have done it! You have created a special fragrance that is of your own design to be used in your candles. There will be no stopping you now. Remember, as with any project, safety first!

People’s interest in candle making has vastly increased in the past few years. Because of this, the demands for the different candle making ingredients like candle making wax also increased. Together with the demand increase is the need for more variety to suit each candle maker’s needs. There are different kinds of candle making wax now available on the market and these will be discussed in this article.

Paraffin Candle Wax

This is the most popular type of candle making wax that is used in most candles. Paraffin is a petroleum based candle making wax. This type is cheaper than other kinds of candle making wax and is readily available. It is available in either chunks or powder form. You have the option to buy one that is already colored or buy an uncolored candle making wax with a matching candle color of your choice.

Soy Candle Wax

Soy candle wax can be considered as one of the newest candle making wax out there. To come up with this type of wax, soybeans need to be hydrogenated. Its popularity can be attributed to the fact that it is a renewable resource and biodegradable as well, making it ecology-friendly.

Candle Beeswax

Candle Beeswax is made from animal based material – the wax bees use in their hives. It is considered as one of the more popular natural waxes that are available in yellow or white. Because Candle Beeswax is naturally aromatic, there’s no need to add candle scents or candle fragrance. This characteristic of Candle Beeswax makes it so attractive to candle makers aside from the burning characteristics it contains as well as its hardiness.

Gel Candle Wax

The process of creating a gel candle wax involves combining processed mineral oil and a gelling agent. Candles that use gel candle wax are characterized by bubbles that you see in the wax. You will also find it to be clear and its texture is somewhat rubbery. Gel candle wax has three different densities that you can choose from depending on what type candle you are going to create and the amount of candle fragrance you are going to use.

There are many more candle making wax available in the market that is not discussed in details here. To select what types of candle making wax you need, you have to consider several factors like budget, candle characteristics, and customer preferences to name a few.

Surely, candle making classes are a great medium for learning. By enrolling in short courses in candle making, you are somewhat ensured that information and details are presented personally. However, enrolling in candle making classes proves to be difficult for others. Besides, not all people have the luxury of time to go to workshops or attend short courses.

Online learning, meanwhile, presents us with a great opportunity. Learning and researching for relative details is also easier. With just a few clicks, you can find a number of sites offering information and details regarding candles. It is like enrolling in a virtual school and enjoying all those candle making classes instantly.

Hobbyist and home-based mothers usually have the time but on a limited basis. Either they are too busy at daytime or have so many responsibilities after work. With candle making classes online, they can easily turn on their lap tops and learn how to create impressive looking candles. At the same time, they can still take care of their families and kids.

By referring to sites and online resources, information regarding candles is presented in detail. You can post questions and seek additional references. You can meet up with other enthusiasts online and share relative stories. You can also try various sites and learn the best candle making tips and tricks.

While candle making classes are seemingly great, you have to realize that enrolling in one requires expense. On the other hand, getting your information online is much cheaper. So, instead of investing your hard-earned cash in tutorials, you can very well allocate them for your materials and candle making kits.

It is not necessarily true that candle making classes have the best of minds in terms of candle making. Pundits and long-time candle makers have managed to put up websites for information sharing. Bloggers and hobbyist do the same thing as well. In the long run, what you acquire online is equal if not greater as compared to mediocre candle making classes.

There is no such thing as perfect medium for learning. The only thing that keeps a student apart is his ability to seek other tools and ways. While candle making classes provide much help, you have to be receptive in accepting other information sources.

Learning how to make great candles does not depend on method but skill. Creativity and the impressive use of imagination count as well. Knowing a thing or two about candle making is definitely your prerogative and it is your persistence that will give you the best tips and techniques.

Though soy candles are readily available in the market, they can also be made at home by combining soy wax with various fragrances and dyes. The procedure of making soy candles is relatively very simple and involves use of material that is readily available at home.

To start with, you just require a pound of soy wax which is readily available in the market, a mason jar and an ounce of fragrance oil along with the wax dye of your favorite color. The first step to make your first soy candle is to place this wax in a container and warm it slowly, applying medium heat. When the soy wax melts completely, take out the pan from the burner. Now put in the fragrance oil and blend the contents till the fragrance is absorbed by the wax. Also add wax dye to the container and follow instructions on its label so that your candles get the desired color.

Now transfer the contents slowly to the container keeping the wick in the central position. You can do this by using a small stick or rod. To ensure smooth burning of your soy candle, use a larger diameter wick. Soon you will see that the wax is slowly solidifying. As soon as the melted wax solidifies, just cut off the excess wick and your candle is ready.

Just a couple of handy tips: When you buy fragrances from the market, it is important to ensure that that they are compatible with soy wax. The same holds true, with the dye you are using. It is necessary to have a dye that melts with the soy wax.

Soy Candle Materials

Soy candle wax was only invented in 1991 but it has already become a very popular wax. There are a number of advantages to using soy wax. First, soy is a natural and long lasting. Soy wax is much less expensive than other natural waxes like bees wax. Soy candles also produce less soot than synthetic candle waxes.

A man named Michael Richards invented soy candle wax in 1991. He had recently entered the candle making supply business earlier in the year. Richards noticed that there was a large consumer demand for natural waxes, but most people could not afford them.

He experimented with the waxes and oils of many different plants before realizing that mixing soybean oil with palm oil and coconut oil made a great wax. He also mixed a small amount of bees wax into the mixture to make it an even better candle-making wax. By 1995 he had perfected the mix, when soy candle-making supply stores first appeared.

Soy wax has many advantages over other types of candle-making wax. Soy wax is natural — it does not include petroleum or other environmentally unsafe ingredients that synthetic waxes may contain. Many soy candle-making supply shops only sell wax made with soybeans grown in the United States. Purchasing these supplies helps the farmers that grow the soybeans.

Another advantage of soy wax over synthetic wax is that it gives off much less soot. There is less of a need to clean up after burning a soy wax candle, and there is no risk of the soot starting a fire.

Soy wax is much less expensive than other natural waxes. It can cost less than half as much as beeswax. Candle makers who want to use a natural wax but can’t afford bees wax are advised to try soy wax.

Soy wax is a great alternative to synthetic wax. It is all-natural and is much less expensive than bees wax.

Have you heard about a relatively new product on the market called a massage candle? If you haven’t, you likely soon will. Massage candles are a unique, new type of candle that’s multi-functional in purpose. They commonly serve as a candle, massage oil, and moisturizing lotion in one.

Sometimes referred to as lotion candles or body candles, massage candles are typically made from a unique combination of cosmetic ingredients instead of traditional candle wax. In addition to providing the relaxing glow and delightful ambiance that candles are know for, the unique formulation of massage candles causes them to melt at a much lower temperature than regular candles do, making them suitable for other uses.

With a very low melt point at just over body temperature, massage candles melt into a rich, warm lotion that can be used for personal or professional massage. They also serve as a moisture-rich lotion that can be excellent for use on cuticles and for moisturizing dry skin.

If you’re considering a purchase, or if you’ve already made one, there are several things you must know to avoid “getting burned” by purchasing a candle that doesn’t meet your expectations, or worse, simply isn’t safe to use.

As a savvy buyer, you need to be sure that the massage candle you purchase is safe and that it will perform in the way you expect it to. To help you make a wise massage candle purchase, here are seven important questions you should use to evaluate your massage candle purchase.

1. Who is the maker of the massage candle? As massage candles have become popular, a number of makers of traditional candles have started to make massage candles as well. Unfortunately, not all candle makers understand that making a massage candle intended for body use calls for considerably different procedures and adherence to federal guidelines. As a body care product, massage candles must comply with regulations specified by the Food and Drug Administration.

As a buyer, it’s important that the candle you’re considering is made by a company or maker who knows what they’re doing. How do you know? Do some homework yourself. Check out the company’s website. Or give the maker a call. At the very least, pay close attention to the remaining questions and related tips on this list so you know what to ask and look for when purchasing massage candles.

2. Are ingredients listed on the label? Traditional candle labels simply contain usage and safety tips. Because massage candles are made to be used on the body, they need to adhere to FDA guidelines which require that all ingredients be listed in order of prominence on the product label. If ingredients are not listed on the label, the maker is not in compliance with the FDA. You also don’t know what is in the candle and it may contain ingredients not best suited for body use.

3. Is the manufacturer’s contact information listed on the label? As an FDA regulated product, the manufacturer’s name and city/state or phone number must be provided on the label. Alternatively, if the candle is made for another entity (i.e. Made for Company XYZ), that must be stated and a contact phone number provided.

4. Is the fragrance oil used safe for body use? Many fragrance oils used to scent traditional candles are not skin-safe. As traditional candle makers have begun to make massage candles as well, a number of them are not familiar with bath and body product guidelines and requirements of the FDA. As a consequence, some massage candles may contain fragrance oils not intended for body use.

Further, how much fragrance oil is used, is also vitally important. Even if a fragrance oil is classified as safe for use on the body, only a fraction of the amount typically used for making traditional candles can be used. As an example, a 16 oz. candle made for scenting rooms commonly contains between 1 to 1-½ ounces of fragrance oil. A similarly sized massage candle can only contain about ¼ ounce to remain body safe. Even body safe fragrance oils can be toxic to the skin if used in excess.

Important: Be especially leery of anyone that says their massage candle is “highly scented” or that it can “scent your whole room.” Such statements are either false, or if true, virtually guarantees that there is far too much fragrance oil used to be safe for use on the skin.

5. Is the candle colored with dye? If so, the dye may not be body safe. Although bath and body product dyes are skin-safe, they typically do not mix well into the types of ingredients used in massage candles. Consequently, colored massage candles tend to feature dyes commonly used in traditional candles, many of which are not safe for body use. If a massage candle is dyed to resemble a traditional candle, consider it a red flag. Most likely, these candles are colored with dyes not intended for body use.

6. Does the container make it easy to access the melted oil? Many jars used as containers for traditional candles make it difficult to access the melted oil for easy and convenient use. Ideally, the container should provide easy access without having to dip deep within to access the melted oil.

7. Does the product leave your skin silky and soft after application? If you’re able to sample, a quality massage candle will not feel waxy, grainy, or leave a heavy residue. If it does, your candle is most likely made with traditional soy candle wax with little (if any) premium cosmetic ingredients included. Quality massage candles feature cosmetic-grade ingredients that will provide your skin with the greatest benefits. The candle should melt into a moisturizing oil that fully absorbs into your skin within a just few minutes, leaving skin silky, soft, and moisturized to the touch.

Treat yourself to a massage candle if you haven’t already tried one. Just make sure you’re buying a candle made by a knowledgeable manufacturer that follows FDA guidelines and uses high quality ingredients. Then just light it, use it, and enjoy!

Making candles is fun and relaxing. While it does give you the opportunity to be creative, there are some basic candle making steps you need to follow to make the process flow well. Nothing is more disappointing than discovering your candles didn’t form correctly. Safety is very important in candle making. Most people make candles in their own kitchen. You will want to have a fire extinguisher handy as well as a non slip mat placed in from of your stove. Always wear old clothing and long sleeves. However, make sure your sleeves don’t dangle where they can fall into the hot wax.

Since you will have to get the candle wax very hot to melt completely, there is the risk of severe burns. You also have the risk of starting a fire. It is important to clean up all spilled wax immediately. It won’t take long for it to harden, thus becoming very slippery. The dyes and scents used in candle making can leave stains.

The best way to set up your work area for candle making is to divide it into three specific work stations for preparation, the melting process, and the cooling process. The preparation area doesn’t need to be large, just a flat surface that is well organized. To make the process flow best, use a counter in close proximity to the stove. You will want to keep your utensils, thermometer, additives, and other candle making supplies in this area. It is a good idea to know what types of candles you will be making ahead of time so that you have all the necessary items ready to go.

Your melting work station will likely be the stove. You will need to use a double boiler to melt the wax to a temperature that is hot enough without scorching it. The molecular structure of the wax can be damaged if the direct heat to it is too much. This means your candles won’t form well or hold up well when they are used. Wax comes in sheets or blocks. You will need to chip off chunks to melt. A hammer and flat head screwdriver work well for this.

Chipping wax should be done in the preparation stage so that you can simply add more pieces throughout the melting process. You will want to weigh each piece of wax before you add it to the pot for melting. This will help you determine how much scent and dye to add, which is based on weight.

The cooling station needs to be a flat area such as a countertop or table. The wax needs to cool for several hours so this area needs to be able to withstand high temperatures as well as remain undisturbed for long periods of time. The area should not be directly in the path of sunlight or heating/cooling systems. If it is, the candles will not set properly. If you plan to use molds for your candles, have them set up in the cooling area while the wax is melting. Once it is done melting, you will need to pour it immediately into the molds. To prevent a mess from spills, use an old cookie sheet for the molds to rest on.

The candle making procedure will run smooth and efficient if you follow these tips for establishing three work stations. While the process should be fun, it is important that you understand the dangers of candle making including burns and fires. Taking the proper safety precautions will help ensure the creation of candles in your home is a great way to spend your time.

Welcome to my candle making site! It wasn’t that long ago that I discovered this wonderful craft

and little did I know that I would fall in love with it. When I first got started I was looking for a new

hobby that I could learn that would be enjoyable for me. I was intrigued with the idea of making my

own candles and after looking into it I discovered that it didn’t appear to be too complicated. It also

didn’t appear to cost a lot of money so I decided to give it a whirl. I purchased an inexpensive e-book

to get me started on the right track. After reading through the book I actually became very excited to

get started. It sounded like a lot of fun. I have to say, I never thought I would become hooked! I

absolutely love it! I started simple just making a few basic candles for myself. I got better at it with

each candle I made. It really gave me a feeling of satisfaction and accomplishment. I then began to experiment

with making a variety of different candles. My e-book was a great help. There were lots of ideas along with

detailed instructions that helped a lot. I don’t need the book anymore as it is very easy to catch on to it. I do refer

to it now and again for new ideas, however. I didn’t realize just how many different ways there are to make candles.

There are many different types of wax to choose from. That alone can keep you busy trying new things. Also, the

different types of molds for you to use is endless. You can add different colors to your wax and you can also add

fragrance oils. I have just started making scented candles and I just love that! There are hundreds of different

scents to choose from and you can even use different combinations to create your own unique fragrance. Now that

I have gotten to be pretty good at it, I enjoy making candles to give as gifts. It is really awsome. People love them,

I enjoy making them, and I am always proud to give them something that I created myself. It also saves me money

during the holidays because it is much cheaper to make a nice beautiful candle for someone than to go out and buy

them a gift. Well, you can clearly see that I have developed a passion for candle making. I never thought I would

develop a love like this when I first started. But here I am and I have decided to put up this site for others who

share the same passion or would like to get started. I will share with you tips, ideas, articles, videos and even links

to other sites that have good information for you. So again, welcome! I hope you enjoy it!
