Candle Making Equipment
The fundamentals of candle making are pretty simple. You melt some wax, reshape it, add a wick, let it
cool and become hard again. That is it in a nutshell. The tools that you will need are also very simple. Here
is an overview of what you will need to make your own candles.
1. A source of heat
This is as simple as your stove.
2. A pot.
A double boiler is the best type of pot to use. It does a great job of melting the wax gently and evenly.
3. Thermometer
You want to pay very close attention to the temperature as you melt your wax. Wax can explode if the temperature
gets too high. It melts quickly so you need to keep a close eye on it.
4. Molds
If you are just learning how to make candles then molded candles are good to start with.
5. Baking pan
This is great for cleaning your candle molds.
6. Scissors, razor blade, craft knife
You will need something fairly sharp to cut your wax and trim your wicks.
7. Hammer and screwdriver
Although not a necessity, these will come in handy when you have a situation where you will
need to break apart slabs of wax. By tapping the end of the screwdriver with the hammer you can
drive it into the wax.
8. Mold sealers
These are used to close up the hole where the wick was threaded in to prevent the wax from leaking out.
9. Releasing agent
This is applied to the inside of the molds to help with the removal process. You can buy spray from a craft
store but vegetable spray works just as well.
10. Wick tabs
Usually the wicks that you buy will have these already. They are the bases that anchor the wick and help it
stand up straight.
11. Fire extinguisher
This is the one tool that you will probably never use. However, always take safety measures.
12. Wax glue
This is an option if you want to apply decorations to the outside of your candles.
This is everything you will need to get started making your first candles. As you can see it doesn’t require a whole lot.
Most of the items you probably already have in your home. You won’t need to go out and spend a bunch of money
on tools and supplies to get started. Now all you need is some good information on how to make your candles
and you can find that right here!
